WRITE SONGS ANYWHERE. ANYTIME.
The Secret to Writing Songs Anytime, Anywhere
What if you could write your next song at the grocery store, on a walk by the lake, or even while driving your kids around?
It’s not just possible—it’s essential. Songwriting isn’t about waiting for inspiration to strike. It’s about always being ready for when it does.
Too often, we box ourselves into needing the "perfect" conditions to write music: the right setup, a quiet studio, and uninterrupted time. But life doesn’t work that way. As creatives, our challenge is to turn everyday moments into songwriting opportunities, no matter where we are.
Think about how many ideas you’ve let slip away because you weren’t in the right place to capture them. How many melodies, lyrics, and moments of inspiration have you lost because you weren’t prepared?
Creativity is fleeting, and without the right tools and mindset, you risk missing out on your best work.
Create the “bed track” in the studio and take it with you!
Here’s a simple practice I’ve used for years to make songwriting a part of my everyday life:
Take a voice recording or a track you’re working on—what I call a "bed track."
This can be a full studio recording or something as simple as you playing guitar into your phone.
Carry this track with you wherever you go.
When inspiration strikes, plug in your earbuds and listen. Jot down lyric ideas, hum a melody, or let your surroundings inspire you. Whether you’re running errands, out in nature, or even stuck in traffic, you’ll always have your songwriting toolkit at your fingertips.
Just airdrop your “bed track” to your phone and save it to your “files.” Then you can open it anytime you have an idea -OR- when you want to listen to the song idea on the go.
This small change—having your "bed track" on hand—can transform how you approach songwriting. It turns waiting time into creative time, making your entire life a canvas for your music.
I created a video to show how this process works for me in real time with a song I’ve been slowly working on over several months I call “Every Storm Is Breaking.” It was so much fun for me to break down a little bit of this process in video form and I hope it brings you a bit more clarity for how this method can be used in the “real world.” Check it out here:
