30 DAY GRATEFULNESS CHALLENGE

The Power of Small Moments to Ignite Big Sparks

Artists and songwriters, we often live for the big vision—the dream project, the masterpiece, the breakthrough moment. But what happens when we get stuck? When inspiration feels distant, like a leaf frozen in ice, and the spark we’re searching for seems out of reach?

In those moments, it’s easy to feel disconnected, frustrated, and even doubtful of our abilities. Creativity thrives on inspiration, yet when we’re frozen in place, waiting for the sun to thaw us out, the waiting can feel endless. What if you didn’t have to wait for that warmth? What if you could create your own?

Let me share a personal story. Just last week I was home in Oregon for some much needed studio time. On one of my morning walks through the cold Oregon air, I came across a pothole frozen over with ice. Just on top of the ice, a single leaf was suspended, as if trapped in time. It struck me: we are often like that leaf. We ride the winds of inspiration, only to find ourselves stuck, unable to move forward. But then I realized something. Just as the sun eventually thaws the ice, there’s a way to spark our own creative flow. And that is… wait for it… wait for it…

gratitude. :)

Sometimes when we sit down to create it feels like we’re that leaf stuck in the ice.

Ok, so check this out: One morning, after a particularly frustrating day of trying to write music, I decided to focus on gratitude. I wrote down three simple things I was thankful for: the laughter of my kids, the warmth of my coffee, and the sound of birds outside my window - just some simple things that I didn’t have to think very long about. Almost immediately, my perspective shifted. That day, a new song poured out of me effortlessly. Gratitude didn’t just improve my mood; it unlocked my creativity.

It’s easy to feel grateful for both of my boys. The thought of them immediately sparks inspiration - especially when they’re happy and have the giggles.

This isn’t just my story. Gratitude is a proven tool for creative optimization. Psychologists have found that practicing gratitude rewires the brain, strengthening pathways that enhance optimism, problem-solving, and divergent thinking—the foundation of all creative work. Spiritually, gratitude anchors us in the present, aligning us with the Creator’s design to find beauty in the little things. I’ve created another video to supplement today’s newsletter that gives some depth and color to this topic of gratitude. I’d for you to check it out here:

Gratitude: The Secret to Unlocking Infinite Creativity

You can experience this transformation too. Start your own 30-day gratefulness challenge. Each morning, take five minutes to write down three things you’re grateful for. It doesn’t need to be profound—just honest. Over time, you’ll see how these small moments of gratitude build a reservoir of creative inspiration.
